Dr. Denis R. Burger, PhD (Chairman)
Dr. Denis Burger is currently the executive Chairman of BioCurex, Inc. He has co-founded Trinity Biotech plc, based in Dublin, Ireland in June 1992 and acted as Chairman from 1992 to 1995 and now serves on the Board of Directors of the Company. Dr. Burger was the past Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and a director of AVI Biopharma Inc, an Oregon based biotechnology company. Dr. Burger is also a partner in Sovereign Ventures, a healthcare consulting and funding firm based in Portland, Oregon. He was a co-founder and, from 1981 to 1990, Chairman of Epitope Inc. In addition, Dr. Burger has held a professorship in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and Surgery (Surgical Oncology) at the Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland. Dr. Burger received his MSc and PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Arizona.
Herbert Abramson
Mr. Abramson has been in the investment industry for 25 years managing portfolios for high net worth individuals. He is a co-founder, Chairman and CEO of Trapeze Capital Corp., an investment dealer and portfolio management company and is also Chairman of Trapeze Asset Management Inc., an affiliated investment counseling company, which together have over $1.6 billion under administration. Mr. Abramson is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada and practiced corporate/securities law for 12 years before going into the investment business. He is also currently Chairman and a Director of St. Andrew Goldfields Ltd.
Georg Ludwig
Mr. Ludwig is the Managing Director of ConPharm Anstalt, a consulting firm specializing in life sciences funds. Prior to January 2005, Mr. Ludwig was a Managing Director at HighTech Private Equity, a leading European venture capital fund focused exclusively on providing financial support for the development of innovative products based on applied technologies and life sciences. Life sciences companies in the HighTech portfolio have development programs in neurology, rheumatology and oncology and are managed by professionals with both operational and strategic experience within these areas. Mr. Ludwig has significant and diverse project management experience, including mergers and acquisition at Bayer AG and Bankhaus Sal. Oppenheim.
Dr. Mark Vincent, MD
Dr. Mark Vincent is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Sarissa, Inc. since 2000. Dr. Vincent has extensive experience as a consultant to Canadian and U.S. biotech and pharma companies. He served as a Director of Drug Royalty Corporation and also sits as a member of Scientific Advisory Board for several biotechnology companies. Dr. Vincent is an Associate Professor of Oncology at the University of Western Ontario and a staff medical oncologist at the London Regional Cancer Program.
Dr. Jim A. Wright, PhD
Dr. Wright is currently the CEO of NuQuest Bio Inc. Dr. Wright serves as a member of Lorus’ Board of directors since 1999, and has served as the company’s President (1999-2006), CEO (2001 – 2006), And Chief Scientfic Officer (1999 – 2001). He was co-founder of GeneSense Technologies Inc having served as the President, CSO and at various times as Chairman of the Board, and Corporate Secretary, from 1996 through 1999 before merging with Lorus. Dr. Wright has extensive experience in cancer research, drug development and biotechnology and is also recognized internationally for his work in cancer biology. He has been a Professor of Microbiology in the Faculty of Science, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Adjunct Professor of Internal Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba. He served as Associate Director and Acting Director of the Manitoba Institute of Cell Biology, at the Manitoba Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation. Up until recently Dr. Wright additionally held the position of Terry Fox Senior Scientist of the National Cancer Institute of Canada. Dr. Wright has published more than 200 scientific papers and has co-authored numerous patent applications.
Dr. Aiping H. Young, MD, PhD
President and Chief Executive Officer
Dr. Aiping Young has served as President and CEO as well as a board member of Lorus since October 2006. Prior to this, she held several progressive positions at Lorus (1999-2006), including Senior VP, Chief Technology Officer and Chief Operating Officer. In 1996, Dr. Young was cofounder, with Dr. Wright, of GeneSense Technologies Inc. and served as VP of R&D until its merger with Lorus in 1999. Dr. Young previously held the positions of Senior Scientist, Group Leader and Medical and Scientific Advisor for Pias Corporation in Japan. Dr. Young has published two books and numerous scientific papers in diverse bioscience areas (e.g. physiology, molecular biology, pharmacology and cell biology) and has co-authored several key patents that have come out of Lorus’ research activities. She holds a medical degree from Jiangxi Medical College in China (1979), and a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from Toyama Medical & Pharmaceutical University in Japan (1989). Dr. Young has been a Research Associate at the University of Manitoba and held the position of an Adjunct Scientist at the Manitoba Institute of Cell Biology in The Manitoba Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
